WHAT TREATMENT FOR PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE?

In the USA, cefoxitin and doxycycline is one of the standard pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) treatment regimens. In an observational study of 682 women with PID, Haggerty and colleagues looked at short and long term outcomes in women treated with these two drugs. Outcomes were worse in women who had Mycoplasma genitalium at baseline. Women with M genitalium were three times more likely to have endometritis at baseline, and were almost five times more likely to have a short term treatment failure: 44% failed to clear the organism at 30 days.
