Planned condom use by women with norplant implants

Abstract

This research examines the use of condoms to protect from disease women who selected hormonal implants for contraception. After receiving contraceptive implants, subjects were surveyed regarding their past use of condoms and their plans for using them to inhibit the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases in the future. Twenty-one percent of women in the sample had used condoms in the past, but did not plan to use them once they have the implants. While decreasing their risk for unplanned pregnancy, they and/or their partners can be expected to experience an increased risk of exposure to sexually transmitted disease. Contraceptive providers must emphasize to their patients the need for protection from disease, in addition to pregnancy, when prescribing contraceptive methods.

Resumé

Les recherches décrites ici étudient l'utilisation des condoms destinée à protéger contre certaines maladies les femmes qui ont choisi les méthodes de contraception par implants hormonaux. Après la pose des implants contraceptifs, une enquête a été menée auprès des femmes au sujet de leur utilisation passée de condoms et de leur intention de continuer à les utiliser afin d'éviter ultérieurement la transmission du HIV et d'autres maladies sexuellement transmissibles. Vingt et un pour cent des femmes avaient utilisé les condoms dans le passé mais n'envisageaient pas de continuer après la pose des implants. Alors que les risques de grossesses involontaires avaient diminué, aussi bien elles que leurs partenaires pouvaient s'attendre à courir un risque accru d'exposition à des maladies sexuellement transmissibles. Les prescripteurs de méthodes et de moyens de contraception doivent insister auprès de leurs patients sur la nécessité de se protéger, non seulement contre des grossess mais également contre d'éventuelles maladies.

Resumen

Este estudio examina el uso de preservativos como protección contra enfermedades en mujeres que seleccionaron implantes hormonales como anticonceptivos. Después de recibir implantes anticonceptivos, las mujeres fueron entrevistadas en cuanto a su uso anterior de preservatios y sus planes relativos al uso de los mismos para inhibir la transmisión del HIV y otras enfermedades transmitidas por contacto sexual en el futuro. El veintiún por ciento de las mujeres de la muestra utilizaron preservativos anteriormente pero no los utilizaràn cuando tengan los implantes. Si bien disminuye el riesgo de tener un embarazo no planificado, cabe pronosticar que ellas y/o sus parejas experimentaràn un riesgo aumentado de exposición a enfermedades transmitidas por contacto sexual. Los proveedores de anticonceptivos deben explicar claramente a sus pacientes la necesidad de protegerse contra enfermedades, ademàs del embarazo, cuando indiquen métodos anticonceptivos.
