A review of the empirical assessment of processes in ethnic-racial socialization: Examining methodological advances and future areas of development
2015, Developmental ReviewCitation Excerpt :First, there are some limitations of the TPB that is important to consider in its application to the PMERS. These include the TPB's focus on a conscious rational decision-making process that does not reflect emotional or implicit processes that determine behavior (Sheeran & Abraham, 1994) and the lack of focus on environmental or cultural factors (Bilic, 2005; Munro, Lewin, Swart, & Volmink, 2007). The PMERS attempts to address some of the limitations in its expansive model that identifies explicit and implicit cognitive, behavioral, affective processes of ethnic–racial socialization as well as contextual socialization processes.
Examining the relationship between psychotropic medication use and testing positive for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea among detained adolescents
2011, Children and Youth Services ReviewCitation Excerpt :Recent epidemiological data indicated that STI rates in the Southern states are higher than any other region (Koumans et al. 2000), although the vast majority of studies on mental illness and STIs/HIV have been conducted elsewhere (McKinnon et al. 2002). A final contribution of this study is that the vast majority of studies assessing STI risks have typically used self-reported measures of disease status, or measures of condom use as a proxy for STI risk infection or risk acquisition (Sheeran & Abraham 1994). This can be problematic because such approaches may advance misclassification of STI risk (Crosby, Diclemente, Holtgrave, & Wingood 2002).
