As the largest single work group in sexual and reproductive health across the UK, it is critical that registered nurses have access to accessible, affordable education that includes clinical competence. This is crucial for the nurse, the public, employer and the commissioners who purchase services.Over the past 4 years, I have had the honour to be the voice of nurses on the board of BASHH. There are many nurses who contact BASHH on a whole range of issues, which are then forwarded to the nurse to respond; education and clinical competency issues are the two major topics.With the demise of the national boards for nurse education in the UK, universities created and offered a multitude of courses, initially delivered locally based on demand and funding.
