  • *All treated and confirmed (by culture) urogenital gonorrhoea infections out of all confirmed gonorrhoea infections.

  • †All untreated and confirmed (by culture) urogenital gonorrhoea infections out of all confirmed gonorrhoea infections.

  • ‡All confirmed urogenital gonorrhoea infections that were treated at the first visit out of all confirmed gonorrhoea infections.

  • §All confirmed urogenital gonorrhoea infections that were treated at the second visit out of all confirmed gonorrhoea infections.

  • ¶Loss to follow-up was calculated as the proportion of confirmed urogenital gonorrhoea infections that were not treated at our clinic within 12 weeks after the definite diagnosis of urogenital gonorrhoea out of all culture-positive (and false-negative Gram) infections requiring treatment. Excluded from this analysis were the consultations in which treatment was given because of a partner with gonorrhoea or in which treatment already was given for anorectal gonorrhoea.

  • **Overtreated patients were those who received treatment upon a false-positive Gram stain out of all infections that were treated upon a positive Gram stain.
